Sarah J. O’Connor
Sarah J. O’Connor is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2005. She began her legal career articling at a tax litigation firm in Toronto, where she enjoyed a tax specific litigation practice, assisting both individuals and small to medium sized business in litigation against the Canada Revenue Agency.
After completion of her articles, she formed Sarah J. O’Connor Legal Professional Corporation, a general litigation and commercial drafting firm in October 2005. Although still focusing primarily on tax litigation, Sarah expanded her practice to include general civil litigation. She also began drafting commercial contracts for clients.
After two years as a sole practitioner, Sarah joined with Gavin Magrath to form Magrath O’Connor LLP in August 2007. Sarah maintains a diverse litigation practice in the areas of civil, tax and plaintiff’s personal injury with a focus on government accountability.
Education and Experience
Sarah obtained her Bachelors of Laws (2004) from Osgoode Hall at York University in Toronto, Ontario. For two years, she was the Magistrar of the Osgoode Inn of Phi Delta International Legal Fraternity. She represented Osgoode Inn as a delegate to Phi Delta Phi’s Biennial Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
During her studies she spent a semester abroad at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, West Indies, studying offshore and international tax law.
Prior to commencing her law career, Sarah graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in history (2001) with a minor concentration in Geography. She was awarded the George Rawlyk Memorial Award.
In her practice, Sarah regularly appears before all levels of Court including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada, the Tax Court of Canada and various administrative tribunals.
Sarah regularly volunteers at Law Help Ontario. Law Help Ontario is a project of Pro Bono Law Ontario that provides pro bono legal services to people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer and are unrepresented in a legal matter.
Sarah is also on the roster for Trial Lawyers for Veterans a free service offered by members of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association to help Ontario veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces access and maintain benefits under the compensation programs offered by the Government of Canada.
Sarah’s client base includes individuals, small and medium sized corporations.
Sarah is currently the Assistant Province President of Province 4 (Eastern Canada) for Phi Delta Phi and the past Vice President of the Bay St. Chapter of BNI.
Sarah is currently enrolled at the University of London (United Kingdom) in the Masters of Law program with a concentration in corporate/commercial law.
